I get to do a favor for a friend today.
She is having surgery today, and I get to take care of her dogs over my lunch break. She called this a big favor. I told her what my friend, C, the one who made me the table runners, has said for years.
"You're giving me the easy stuff."
In other words, my friend hasn't asked a hard favor yet. But to her, because she has much on her mind and because she loves her pets so much and takes such good care of them and because she never wants to impose on anyone, to her, this is a big favor.
To me, I'm honored to be asked and thrilled it works out for me to do this. When people go through stuff, we always say, "Let me know if I can do anything," and we really mean it. So when we get that chance, we are happy to help.
Even in small ways...that are big ways...depending upon your perspective...
I love doing favors. I love receiving favors - as in party favors. But I don't love asking for favors. I don't think I'm alone in that. Jesus said a long time ago that it is more blessed to give than to receive. And He was right. Giving is the easy stuff. Receiving can be hard - or even just asking can be hard.
But don't we all love to be asked? Especially when someone is facing something like surgery? And we jump at the chance to love on them in even small ways. So why is it so hard for us to ask when we need something?
Ah, rhetorical questions for another day.
Today I am celebrating that I get to do a favor for a friend. I'm thankful she is my friend and I pray that her surgery goes well and smoothly today...very shortly now, in fact. If you are a praying sort, feel free to say a prayer for her, too.
Oh, and for pie. I'm always thankful for pie.
