The B You Never Knew # 3 - Street Signs

This is story # 3 in our series, "The B You Never Knew."  This took place when B was about 12 years old.  Like many things in life, approaching situations with humor will make them lighter and help everyone cope with whatever stress may come along.  In this case, B was part of a tandem bike riding team through the organization, Delta Gamma for Children with Visual Impairments, that had given us such wonderful therapy when B was just a baby and toddler.  During the off season, they would do spinning classes on stationary bikes to stay in shape.  And that essentially sets our stage for story # 3...

Street Signs

B had a spinning class, and I had plans to go bike riding for my birthday.  So I asked my friend, C, to take B.  C agreed, so I gave her the address and some directions and told B to be ready to be picked up before C arrived.

I left that morning, confident that all was set not giving it another thought.  And sure enough C picked B up, and they were off and running.

The spinning class is located in Maplewood in the industrial complex behind Dierbergs.  I knew it was a little tricky getting back to the actual building, but I thought my directions were sufficient for C to find it.

As I understand the story, they made it to 170 and Eager Road just fine.  They turned into the industrial complex and began looking for the class.  But they got turned around and started going in circles as the phrase goes.

C is starting to get a bit concerned that they will be sucked into the industrial complex vortex for all eternity at this point, so she starts to ask B for help.

B is sitting in the passenger seat, thinking all is well.  It seems to be taking longer than normal to get to spinning, but maybe C drives slower than mom.

“Did you see that street sign, B?” C asks.

B doesn’t respond, thinking that C is really just talking to herself.

“What about that sign?  Did you see what street that sign said?” C again asks.

And again B doesn’t respond.

“We are looking for Hanley Industrial Court, but have you seen these signs?  They all seem to say Hanley Industrial Court!” C exclaims.

B looks at C like she has three heads, still not saying anything, clearly perplexed on how to proceed.  Finally she just jumps in.

“You do know that I’m legally blind, right?  That I can’t see the street signs?”

Not missing a beat, C replies with, “So what?  That’s your excuse for not helping me find this place?!”

C and B both laughed at that point!

C hasn’t ever let B forget it either.  They still laugh about this today.
